Destrehan destroys H.L. Bourgeois, 63-8

The Destrehan Wildcats blew out H.L Bourgeois 63-8 on Friday to set up an epic clash with East St. John for the District 7-5A championship next week.

Usually, Destrehan’s offense strikes early and often, but against H.L. Bourgeois it was the defense that got things started. Wildcat safety Brandon Scott scooped up a fumble and took it 40 yards to give Destrehan an early 7-0 lead.

Then it was the offense’s turn.

Quarterback Donovan Isom marched the Wildcats down the field over the Braves defense. Isom connected with Alfred Smith for a 20-yard gain and then found Smith again for a gain of 13. Junior running back Will Matthews did the rest, rushing 19 yards for the score to put the Wildcats up 14-0 with 2:38 left in the first quarter.

Matthews wasn’t done yet though, and scored a 24-yard touchdown on his team’s next possession to give the Wildcats a 21-0 lead with 15 seconds left in the first.

Early in the second quarter, backup running back Karon Taylor found paydirt to stretch the score to 28-0, but H.L. Bourgeois finally got on the board with a 29-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion to cut into the Wildcat advantage.

That was as close as the Braves would get.

Matthews rumbled through the Braves defense for a 36-yard score only a few minutes later, and linebacker RaeJuan Marbley recovered a fumble that set up Matthews’ fourth touchdown of the first half and put Destrehan up 42-8.

The Wildcats padded their lead in the third when sophomore defensive tackle Glen Logan got the first interception and touchdown of his young career after jumping in front of an errant pass and bringing it to the end zone.

Destrehan senior running back Ja’Rion Narcisse scored on an 8-yard run to put Destrehan up 56-8 in the third and the Wildcats got a final touchdown in the fourth to complete the route.

Next week, Destrehan will travel to take on East St. John, who is currently undefeated in district play. The winner of the Destrehan vs. East St. John game will finish the regular season as district champs. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
