As time ran down with under a minute left, the voices of the Destrehan fans rang into the night.
“WE WANT HAHN-VILLE!” the chant went, over and over, as the Wildcats salted away a 21-7 victory over visiting John Ehret, staying unbeaten with their meeting with archrival Hahnville next to play.
“If we can get this defense playing like they were playing tonight, the sky’s the limit,” said Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux. “We had a few hiccups on offense, but I so pleased with defense tonight. Our guys played extremely hard.”
Kristian Mosley scored touchdowns from 2 and 53 yards out en route to a 145 yard rushing night and Kohen Granier connected with Justin Jefferson for an 11-yard scoring pass to lift the Wildcats to victory.
Mosley said he was ready to carry the ball, especially given the night’s rainy conditions.
“They did tell us we were gonna lean on the run a little more, (because) it’s hard to catch the ball in the rain,” Mosely said.
The Wildcats led for most of the game. Mosley’s first touchdown run, from 2 yards, pushed DHS ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. Ehret answered on Brandon Brown’s 9-yard run to tie the game early in the second quarter.
DHS took the lead again on Granier’s touchdown pass to Jefferson, making it a 14-7 Destrehan advantage at the half.
Mosley’s 53-yard touchdown run just before the end of the third quarter all but put the game away for the Wildcats.
“We said hang in there, we can wear em out a little bit eventually,” said Robicheaux. “I think that’s what happened in the second half and we busted a big play.”
Ehret playmaker Jamaal Houston suffered an apparent knee injury in the second quarter, which Robicheaux said was a limiting factor for Ehret.
“No doubt, he’s a special player,” Robicheaux said. “He was their go-to guy. We kinda knew that and when he went out, and it changed the complexion of the game.”
