Crawfish rebound after rough start

Crawfish season got off to a slow start, but is now starting to pick up according to local seafood dealers.

“It’s much better right now,” Blandon Zeringue, of Zeringue’s Seafood, said. “We were two months behind but everything is starting to look good.”

Willie Hebert, of Hebert’s Seafood, agrees.

“It’s looking fair right now,” he said. “The weather is getting warmer and it’s picking up.”

Both say that the crawfish coming into their stores have had good size thanks to a recent molt.

A dry spell this fall combined with a cold winter to keep the crawfish population down in early February. When the water dips below 50 degrees, crawfish move in slow motion and many stay stationary.

But because of the late start of Lent, there was enough time for the weather to heat up just in time.

“But that’s not to say a cold front won’t come through at some point and mess with everything,” Hebert said. He did add that crawfishing in the spillway will probably pick up soon as  river levels begins to rise.

Both Zeringue’s and Hebert’s are selling a pound of live crawfish for $2.79.
