After suffering a tough loss last week to Jesuit, the Hahnville Tigers were out to prove something this week. And a 56-0 victory over the Istrouma Indians was a pretty strong statement.
The Tigers don’t feature a spread offense, but spreading the ball around was their modus operandi Friday night as eight different Tigers scored touchdowns.
Hahnville put the game away in the first quarter. Running backs Travis Faucheaux and Ernest Thompson were the first two on the board with touchdown runs of 28 and 10 yards respectively.
After Thompson’s score, Hahnville defensive back Jamal Smith took the ball right back with an interception that he returned 23 yards to the Istrouma 22-yard line. Then after rushing the ball almost exclusively on their first three drives, the Tigers took to the air as quarterback Easton Melancon connected with wide receiver Ronny Green on an 18-yard touchdown reception. That brought the score to 21-0 with less than three minutes to go in the first quarter.
Green then stole the spotlight again as he recovered an onside kick and gave the Tigers another chance to score before the second quarter. The Tigers put the ball in the endzone less than a minute later on an eight-yard touchdown run by running back Michael Ford, who led the team in rushing on the night with 66 yards on seven carries.
The current of first quarter touchdowns then continued flowing as Melancon found wide receiver Kailon Carter on a 33-yard touchdown pass just as time expired, giving Hahnville a 35-0 lead.
The Hahnville offense cooled down a bit in the second quarter, but the defense continued its dominance as defensive linemen Jamon Lathers and Logan Gonzalez both sacked Istrouma quarterback Darius Jones. The first sack forced the Indians to punt and the ball was fumbled in the endzone. Tiger defensive back Tyren Hills recovered it for Hahnville’s sixth touchdown of the first half.
The Tigers took a 42-0 lead into halftime, but the first team offense put one more score on the board in the third quarter before exiting. Melancon connected on his third touchdown pass of the night, this one a 33-yarder to wide receiver Jaylon Bryant.
Then the reserves came in and scored a touchdown of their own on a nine-yard run from running back Jamal Cannon, giving the Tigers a decisive 56-0 victory.
The Indians were held to just three first downs on the night as the Tiger defense pressured Jones all night and held their running game in check. The Tiger running game, however, bounced back this week as the team rushed for over 240 yards.
Next Friday, the Tigers travel to Lutcher to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
