3-run home run leads East Ascension past Hahnville, 4-2

Senior pitcher Daniel Arnold fires a fastball in the first inning of the Tigers’ 6-4 win over West Ouachita on Friday.

The Hahnville Tigers dropped their first district game of the season to East Ascension on Tuesday.

Hahnville took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a double by senior Jared Vial and the Tigers held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the third. That’s when East Ascension’s Chase Rivet slammed a three-run home run that gave the Spartans all they would need for the victory.

Rivet, who also had a double in the game, picked up the win on the mound for East Ascension and improved to 3-1 on the season. Hahnville’s Jake Cologne (2-2) suffered the loss.

Despite the loss, the Tigers (12-4) have looked good this season.

On Monday, Hahnville head baseball coach Kade Rogers said he couldn’t be happier with the way his team has started the year.

“We are playing hard right now and if you play hard good things will happen,” Rogers said. “Our pitchers are hitting their spots and we are hitting the ball well and fielding well…just the basic fundamentals.”

Only St. Michael, Mandeville, Jesuit and East Ascension have beaten the Tigers this season. On the flip side, almost all of Hahnville’s victories have been by huge margins. In  fact, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 126-42 in their 12 wins.

Though the Tigers have had plenty of impressive victories, Rogers said that one win sticks out in his mind.

Earlier this year Hahnville was trailing Ruston 7-1, but slowly chipped into the lead before adding four runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 victory.

“That showed what they were made of,” Rogers said.

And his team will have to continue showing that grit and determination in district play.

“This district is tough every year. You can’t take any team lightly,” he said. “We just need to continue doing the things that make us better.”

The Tigers will face off against Destrehan on March 24 when they host the Wildcats at 4 p.m. The Wildcats are 9-8 on the season and lost their district opener to Dutchtown, 5-2.

The Tigers will then travel to Dutchtown on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. game.
