Deaf Evangelism Conference set for May18-20 at campground in Tioga
After a two-year hiatus, the Louisiana District UPC Deaf Evangelism Ministry Conference is back with a terrific program May 18-20 at the ministry’s campground in Tioga, 1800 Hickory Hill Road. The annual conference, normally presented in October, has not been held since 2004 due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “For the past two years, we turned our campground over to hurricane victims, feeding, clothing and tending to their medical needs,” said Mary Young, State Coordinator of the Louisiana District UPC Deaf Evangelism Ministry.
“A number of our preachers lost their churches, so we were able to lend them a helping hand as well.”
In the off-chance that such a need arises again this year, the 2007 three-day conference is being held in advance of hurricane season. Registration begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 18, followed by an evening service at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Meloy Richmond, a deaf evangelist from Greenville, Miss.
Participants can also register at 8 a.m. Saturday and then attend either the Rev. Richmond’s Bible Class for the Deaf or the Interpreter Workshop by Mark and Melanie Mitchum, deaf ministers of music from Arlington, Texas.
The workshop will address all levels of interpreters, with instructors demonstrating the difference between merely signing and signing with conceptual accuracy and enthusiasm.
Saturday night ends with an inspiring 7 p.m. concert consisting of various sign language groups ministering in music.
The conference closes Sunday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richmond’s morning worship. Both of Richmond’s services include a voice interpreter for the conference’s hearing participants. Conference attendees can earn .5 professional studies or continuing education credits.
“We’re expecting a huge turnout from both the deaf community and interpreters, because the conference has so much to offer,” Young said.
Pre-registration is $35 per person, $60 per married couple, or $10 for the concert only. The campground dorms are available free of charge, but you must bring provisions (sheets, towels, soap, etc.).
