It’s been a wild ride for the Destrehan football team over the past two seasons.
Many expected the Wildcats to win a state championship last year, thanks largely to playmakers such as Jordan Jefferson, Damaris Johnson and Jerico Nelson, who are all starting and starring on their respective college teams this year as freshmen.
But this year’s squad didn’t have quite as much fanfare. Sure, the Wildcats have several big time defensive players, but there weren’t too many people that thought they would get back to the state championship game, let alone go undefeated doing it.
Those people were proven wrong last Saturday as Destrehan held on for a 21-14 win over Baton Rouge Central to lock down their second straight championship game appearance.
As head coach Stephen Robicheaux will tell you, this is a special team, filled with players who work hard everyday and go into each game with a blue collar mentality. The Wildcats still have plenty of talent, but each player on the team knows their particular job and then goes out and does that job exceptionally well.
That’s what it takes to win ballgames.
And Destrehan has excelled at that for two straight years, which is why they are in the midst of a 28-game win streak.
This Saturday, the Wildcats will put it all on the line as they face off with top-seeded West Monroe. While several seem to think that Destrehan is the underdog in the championship game, we would disagree.
This team knows what it takes to win a championship, since many on the team were under the Dome lights last year celebrating a huge win over Acadiana.
West Monroe wasn’t there last year.
So this Saturday, do your best to try to get out to New Orleans and watch Destrehan attempts something that is hardly done anymore in sports – a second straight championship and a second straight undefeated season.
