Now that the frustrating income tax preparation season is over, have you had enough? It seems to be a very unfair way of financing the government.
Because of the complicated system, many people find ways of paying very little though they can afford to pay a lot. And some don’t pay at all.
It is entirely too complex for the average citizen to understand. And shouldn’t the laws of our land be simple enough so everyone can abide by them?
A flat tax, which Steve Forbes proposed in one presidential election, would be simpler to compute. It could exempt so much income a year for each individual and then tax them on the same percentage rate for the balance. Taxable incomes, however, would still have to be figured and therein is where the major problem lies.
Another proposal, by Ron Paul in the last Presidential election, is a national sales tax. This would be the simplest because the ordinary individual would not have to figure anything.
Since the rich buy more products, they would end up putting more money into the government than low income folks. And businesses would pay a major share, which would be passed on to the people through higher prices.
We know we are not anywhere near a solution to our frustrations. But let’s keep our minds open to one.
Though the name “income tax” sounds like the fairest way to tax, it just isn’t so.
