Are we going too far with our economic recovery plan?
It should be a short-lived, temporary thing that puts money into circulation to stir up the economy so the government can hurry up and get back to its full time duty. And that is protecting its citizens and providing the infrastructure for them to live their own lives in a worthwhile and productive fashion.
It should include increasing the money spent on improving roads and bridges, and, ahem, restoration of the Louisiana coastline. This is not the time to start new government programs. We have enough of them.
Once the private sector is humming again, we can let the federal government go back to what it is supposed to do. And then let the people make the private sector work better.
Many of the government programs proposed in the plan would be never ending. It would expand the role of government in our lives. And we know how inefficient that can be.
Congress should concentrate on making the changes needed to make our recovery fast and effective.
