Our area can be prosperous

According to Mitch Landrieu, the mayor next door, New Orleans is the fastest growing city in America. “In just four years, we have created more than 8,000 new jobs. Retail is booming. Property values and sales are strong. And there’s even more promise on the horizon as we create a new biosciences industry centered on several new hospitals, rebuild the water and sewer pipes underneath our streets and rebuild a world-class airport.”

The airport, of course, is partly located in St. Charles Parish. Jobs seem to be increasing here too and new businesses are settling in.

To expand discussion of the landscape, the entire southeastern part of Louisiana seems to be growing at a high rate. A lot of this is due, of course, to the presence of the Mississippi River here in the delta where the water flows into the Gulf of Mexico and many of the international ships sail through. At the present time the Panama Canal is being enlarged to allow bigger ships to go through it which means it will be a short cut to the Mississippi River and Louisiana. That will mean more ships at our ports and more business here.

Add to that the existence of plants along the river, especially in St. Charles, that provide livelihoods for many that are here and attract many more out-of-staters to take advantage of it.

Lately we have also become one of the major movie-making spots in the world. Move over, Hollywood.

That leads us to believe that southeastern Louisiana has a great future in store for it. The oil and gas industry, the fishing industry and one of the world’s top international ports are, of course, primary contributors to that benefit.

So, with elections coming up on the local and state levels, we certainly want everyone to start thinking about who among the candidates would serve us best in our future. An active electorate is the best way to ensure that we put the best candidates in the government jobs. The mayor next door is right, southeast Louisiana seems to

have a prosperous future at the rate it is going. We are fortunate that our natural resources have played a big part in that, but the people themselves must play a big part in making those natural riches work for them. Building good governments where freedom and incentives exist makes it possible.
