On May 25, people across the country will celebrate Memorial Day, which commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.
Over one million men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom since the creation of this great country. And this year, as in the past seven years, Memorial Day comes at a time when Americans in the military are in various parts of the globe battling terrorism. So it will be especially appropriate on May 25 to thank those men and women for their courage and their commitment.
While several residents will chose to honor Veterans and others currently fighting overseas in their own way, the St. Charles Parish Veterans organizations will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Courthouse.
The event, which will begin at 10 a.m., will last about an hour and feature various patriotic songs, speeches and poems. Jonas Augustine will sing the national anthem, the Boutte Christian Academy choir will perform patriotic songs, Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre will recite a poem and former Parish President Albert Laque will speak at the event.
There will also be a presentation of the POW/MIA table, which debuted at the National Day of Prayer earlier this month.
So while many residents get the day off on May 25, don’t forget to honor the occasion. If it weren’t for the brave men and women who have fought for this country, its fate and ours could have been completely different.
