This weekend in St. Charles Parish, there are two very important things residents can do.
On Saturday, if they are registered at the polls, they can do their duty by voting in the finale of a very important election that can affect the way our local, state and national governments are operated. And on Sunday they can welcome Santa Claus to the parish on the riverfront in Norco in a 12-float parade that will set the stage for the Christmas season in our area.
Voting in the election, of course, should be a priority for those of age if they have not done so already and want to contribute to the success of their government. It is the patriotic duty for those who did not take advantage of early voting.
It is an important election in which the winners will represent us in a variety of major positions in our state and nation. Among other officials, we will be selecting a U. S. senator and U. S. congressman from Louisiana.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Saturday at regular polling places.
And the next day – ho, ho, ho – Santa will arrive in a helicopter on the Mississippi River levee near Apple Street at 1:30 p.m. From there he will be escorted in a 12-float parade through the streets of Norco. Some 15 musical groups will entertain the crowd, which is expected to be quite large.
The parade annually attracts many people from the River Parishes. A community celebration will follow the parade at the Capital One Bank parking lot on Apple Street where Santa and Mrs. Claus will light the Christmas tree. They will then pose for free pictures and parents are encouraged to bring their cameras.
So make ready for a big weekend in which local residents can do their duty by voting, if they haven’t done so already. They can also help introduce the Christmas season by giving a festive welcome to Santa Claus.
