Get ready for elections and lots of choices

Ahead of Louisianans lie a lot of politics in selecting holders of many local and state offices during the current year and next year when the thundering herd of at least 17 Republican candidates and one or two on the Democratic side intensify the race for our next president of the United States.

And if you thought our sports calendar would provide most of our thought-provoking attention in the coming months, think ahead.

Politics are already well underway this year and if we haven’t begun to arrange our thoughts about who to press the buttons for at the local and state levels, we better get going. Some final decisions must be made within the next four months.

So it is at least time to start studying up on local political choices. Merely reading up on political ads and news articles will not entirely tell you who to vote for. But it may build up some questions in your minds about issues to face your future public officials.

And since candidates usually like to talk to voters before election time, there should be many opportunities to question them on issues that may arise during their years of office if elected. And it could give you a good view on how well they will serve in the offices they seek.

First off, make up a list of public official offices you will be expected to vote upon and then collect data on who is running and their qualifications to serve. Attend candidate meetings and debates if there are any because that is where you can get the most important information on how each of the candidates will serve in their positions if elected.

And as elections approach, be sure you will be in your voting area on election day or else check on absentee voting at earlier dates to be sure your choices count. And if you didn’t absentee vote, get up early election day to be sure you can get to the polls in time to do your duty.

You can take your time on the national slates since most of them won’t go to the polls for more than a year. But your choices will count so be sure you start deciding early.

In fact, it will be hard to miss out on who deserves your support since campaigning is already rather intense. So join in and make the rest of this year and next count in helping to put the best candidates in office.

And, by the way, if you’re not registered to vote, that is the most important consideration so run to the registrar’s office today and do so. Then you will be able to do the rest of the job this year and next.
