Mary Elizabeth Hitt

Mary Elizabeth Hitt (Sutton) of Luling departed this life on Feb. 20.

Born on May 21, 1932 in Southampton England to Ernest and Elizabeth Sutton, she is survived by her daughter Liz Hitt (Shelly Walsh), her sister Margaret Montano, her sister-in-law Diane, her niece Karen, two nephews (David and Paul), numerous friends, and her extended family in New York and Vermont.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Hitt; son Charles Hitt; brother John, and her parents. Hitt came to the U.S. in 1959 for a one year teaching assignment in Jefferson City, Mo. After heading to the New Orleans area, she continued to teach fifth-sixth grade math and science for another three decades.  Both Orleans and St. Charles Parish Schools benefitted from Mary’s devotion and she loved her students, her colleagues, and her classroom.

Hitt received a bachelor’s degree in Education from Tulane University and a master’s in education from the University of New Orleans.  Upon retirement, she found tremendous joy from volunteering with numerous groups including; St. Charles Parish Friends of the Library, Women United (New Life Community Church; a United Methodist Congregation), the Retired Teacher’s Association, and the St. Charles Parish Council on Aging.

A service of remembrance was held March 4 at New Life Community Church in Luling.  Burial will be held in Bethuel Cemetery in Millington, Tenn., at a later date.  Those wishing to honor Mary can make a contribution to Women United at New Life Community Church 134 Lakewood Drive, Luling, or the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society, 138 Central Ave Albany, NY, 12206.  Condolences may be mailed to Liz Hitt at P.O.
