Sister Marguerite-Marie Brou

Sister Marguerite-Marie Brou, O.P., Dominican Sister of Peace (formerly Congregation of St. Mary, New Orleans, LA), age 87 years and in her 65th year of religious profession, died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 4:30 a.m. at Mohun Healthcare Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Sister was born in Wallace, Louisiana, daughter of the late Felicien Joseph Brou and Helene Fontaine Brou, sister of the late Marie-Louise B. LaDow, Maurice J. Brou, Edward D. Brou, Sister Jane Frances Brou, O.P., and Francis E. Brou.

Survived by two sisters, Mrs. Cecile B. Mongrue and Mrs. Jeanne B. Caillet both of Luling, Louisiana, and nieces and nephews.  Sister Marguerite received a bachelor’s degree in French from St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans, Louisiana, master’s degrees in French and in Library Science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a Ph.D. in French Literature from Laval University in Quebec, Canada.

Since her profession of vows in 1945, Sister Marguerite was a French Professor, Registrar, Business Office Assistant, Bookstore Manager, Director of the Library, Chair of the Humanities Department, and Chair of the Foreign Language Department at St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans.

From 1971-81, Sister was the Archivist for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She became the Treasurer for the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in 1981 and held that position until 1984 when she was named the Archivist for St. Mary’s Dominican College until 2000.  At the time of her death, Sister Marguerite was living a life of prayer at Mohun Healthcare Center in Columbus, Ohio.
