Olivia Rome, a Houma woman who was arrested in May and charged with attempting to hire a hitman to kill her husband living in Paradis, still has to answer for that charge in Terrebonne Parish, where she’s being tried. But in the meantime, she has already pleaded guilty in St. Charles Parish to violation of protective orders. Rome, 40, was issued a suspended sentence of six months in prison, which she can avoid by fulfilling the terms of her probation. She also received credit for time served of 30 days in prison.
She has been charged in Terrebonne Parish with solicitation for murder. The St. Charles Parish charge of violation of a protective order came as result of Rome contacting her estranged husband and children via computer messages after being ordered to not make contact with them, according to police.
A joint investigation by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Houma Police Department led to her arrest on the solicitation for murder charge. Rome allegedly detailed in her journal her efforts to hire someone to kill her husband, who has not been named. The journal allegedly helped investigators identify a witness and a suspect in the scheme.
Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman said the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted the initial investigation and notified his department about the possible hit for hire.
“We learned the subject resided in our jurisdiction and worked hand-in-hand with them, and verified the complaint that was made with witnesses,” Coleman said of the joint investigation with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Coleman said Sheriff’s Office detectives have the contents of the journal.
“You always hear about stuff like this, but you rarely get cases like this,” Coleman said.
On the charge of violation of protective orders, she was fined $500 plus court costs and must undergo court-recommended substance abuse treatment.
