West Bank Market plans move to Paul Maillard

Move aimed at aiding area revitalization

A planned move for the German Coast Farmers’ Market to a new nearby location is aimed at reviving the West Bank market, as well as boosting business on Paul Maillard Road.

“We would like to help the parish in the revitalization efforts along with helping our vendors,” said Marketing Director Ann Montgomery. “We are trying to make this market more successful.”

Pending approval by the St. Charles Parish Council, the market currently at St. Charles Shopping Plaza in Luling would move to Winnwood Shopping Center at 1313 Paul Maillard Road, also in Luling.

Montgomery said they anticipate getting council approval for the move on Nov. 14.

“We had several locations for the West Bank market, but they weren’t large enough, allowing only three to five vendors,” she said.

Montgomery said farmers who sell at the location welcome the move to grow sales. They also hope to grow the number of vendors at the market.

“I have the consent of eight to 10 vendors who will try the new location,” she said.

Montgomery said the goal is to open Nov. 16 from 1 – 5 p.m. every Wednesday. The holidays should boost sales.

“People are doing a lot of family events that they could need produce for cooking holiday meals, as well as purchase already made pastries and sweets,” she said.

Master gardeners will continue to offer advice at the market, as well as the St. Charles Parish Library attending once a month to educate the public on its services, she said.

The proposed location has proven successful with “pop-up markets” held there, Montgomery said.

Previously on River Road, the West Bank Farmers’ Market moved to its current location in early 2009, also with the goal of boosting sales. The location was chosen to tap Highway 90’s high traffic flow.
