Held at HHS Friday, Saturday
Families looking for a fun way to get over the Mardi Gras hangover need to look no further than the Business and Craft Showcase of St. Charles, which is breaking with tradition this year by having a game show, a putt-putt golf course, Zumba classes and taekwondo demonstrations.
The St. Charles Business Association sponsors the annual fest, which will be held this Friday and Saturday in the Hahnville High School gym. Doors open on Friday at noon and close at 5 p.m. On Saturday the fest is open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Admission to the event is free.
“We are trying to make the fest fun and interactive for families this year,” Rhonda Sigrist, a member of the St. Charles Business Association, said. “This is not the normal trade show that we have every year.”
There will be several businesses at the fest that will offer information on the types of products they offer. This year, several businesses will also be selling merchandise.
Organizers are hoping that an infusion of fun will help draw crowds to the event this weekend. The 4H Junior Leaders will be running a popular game show throughout the fest called “Minute to Win It.”
The show, which appears on NBC, uses ordinary household items to challenge contestants. Some of the games that are performed in the show include balancing six dice on a popsicle stick held in the mouth, transporting gumballs from one soda bottle to another in under 60 seconds, or knocking over empty cans using a yo-yo tied to the back of the waist.
“The 4H Junior Leaders will be in charge of all the different games, so I don’t know exactly which ones they are going to play,” Sigrist said. “They are all teenagers and are taking it very seriously so I know they are going to do a great job and make it fun.”
Another draw will be Ama’s Putt ’em Den Geaux putt-putt golf course. The company rents out portable putt-putt courses for birthday parties and other events and will have a course set up for business fest visitors.
“This is a brand new business that hasn’t advertised at all and a lot of people are going to be interested in their putt-putt course,” Sigrist said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Additionally, Destrehan TaeKwonDo Academy will have women’s self-defense courses throughout both days of the event and students from the academy will put on various demonstrations that showcase their skill.
Zumba classes will also be taught by Anytime Fitness and children can soar through the air on inflatables from Percles JumpNFun.
The St. Charles Community Health Center will provide free health screenings and the Ochsner Bloodmobile will accept donations. Food during the festival will be provided by Luling’s Mariano’s Italian Eatery and coffee and treats will be served by Southern Latte Café.
“We are expecting a big turnout this year because school is out and people are looking for something fun to do after Mardi Gras,” Sigrist said. “I’m excited.”
