State still evaluating bridge work

The aim is for the cones and barracades in place narrowing lanes approaching the bridge on Interstate 310 in both directions to be removed by the end of the year, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD). The cones were put in place during upgrade construction work on the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge earlier this year.

DOTD spokeswoman Bambi Hall said that the cones are remaining in place while the performance of the  bridge’s new concrete deck is evaluated.

The last segment of the deck overlay project was poured with concrete on the bridge on June 2, which Hall said marked efforts to restore travel lanes to the usual configuration of two southbound lanes and two northbound lanes.

“Pending a satisfactory evaluation, the north side crossover with all associated traffic controls will be removed by the end of the year,” Hall said.

The DOTD work on the bridge began in January. The bridge’s asphalt deck or road surface was replaced with an estimated 2,300 cubic yards of concrete, which the DOTD determined would provide a use life of at least 15 years.

A goal of the project was to provide a smoother and safer roadway structure.

An estimated 52,000 vehicles use the bridge on a work day.
