St. Rose man found shot to death on sidewalk

Deputies responding to reports of gunfire in St. Rose early Saturday morning discovered the lifeless body of a 22-year-old man on the sidewalk of Summerton Drive.

Deaneal “Woodie” Rachal was shot at 12:45 a.m. He was killed by a single gunshot wound, according to Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Yoes said the Sheriff’s Office was currently following up on leads, but that detectives are looking for witnesses.

Rachal’s death is the third murder in St. Rose in the last year. Jared Mealey, 19, was shot several times on May 29, 2012 while sitting in his car in the Preston Hollow neighborhood. Michael McCray Jr., 18, was parked in a driveway on Mockingbird Lane in January when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle. McCray was struck four times and died at the scene.

Reshaunda Blanks previously lived in Preston Hollow before moving near the area of the most recent murder.

“(Rachal) was killed right behind our place in the apartments behind us,” she said. “It’s too close. It’s crazy because I have a son and I don’t want him to get caught up in this.”

Anyone with information regarding Rachal’s murder is asked to contact Det. Jeremy Pitchford at (985) 783-1135 or (985) 783-6807 or call Crimestoppers at 1(877) 903-STOP (7867).
