St. Charles Parish charities receive major boost from Valero’s $1 million donation

Valero’s St. Charles Parish Refinery announced last week it distributed $1 million to ten different local children’s charities in the local area from funds raised via its Valero Texas Open (VTO) and Valero Benefit for Children (VBC) events.

The donations were announced at an event on Nov. 29 at Valero’s refinery in Norco.

Valero’s annual golf tournament and related events raised over $23 million earlier this year for various charities across the country, including those in St. Charles Parish and the surrounding areas.

“Across the U.S., hundreds of BFC-recipient charities are positively impacting thousands of lives, and all for one purpose – to make a difference for children,” said Jerry Stumbo, Vice President and General Manager of the Valero St. Charles Refinery. “We’re proud to partner with these agencies and work together to improve children’s lives right here in St. Charles Parish and the surrounding area.”

Ten local charities each received $100,000 in funding from Valero this year, including: A Safe Space of St. Charles, Child Advocacy Services Inc, Creative Family Solutions (CFS), Matthew 25:35 Ministries, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, Special Olympics Louisiana Inc, St. Charles Community C.A.R.E. Center Foundation Inc, St. Michael Special School, Youth Empowerment Project, and the Make-A-Wish Gulf Coast and Louisiana organization.

“It is the season of giving, and [CFS] genuinely appreciates Valero Energy for recognizing the work we do to help children and families in St. Charles Parish,” Eric Dishongh, CFS Executive Director, said after accepting his group’s $100,000 donation. “Valero’s generosity ensures that CFS will continue to provide professional counseling services to children, adolescents and their families in St. Charles Parish, especially those who are vulnerable and at-risk.”

The VTO was held in late March of this year in San Antonio, Texas at the TPC San Antonio course. It ranks first on the PGA Tour in charitable funding. First held in 1922, the VTO is the third oldest Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour tournament and the oldest PGA Tour tournament to have been held in the same city its entire existence.

As one of St. Charles Parish’s largest employers, Valero Energy Corporation is an international manufacturer and marketer of petroleum-based products and fuels, publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange as VLO. Valero owns 15 petroleum refineries throughout the United States, including its refinery in Norco. Valero is also a joint venture member in Diamond Green Diesel Holdings LLC, which owns a renewable diesel plant in Norco.
