St. Charles helped elect Trump as president

Republican President-elect Donald Trump carried St. Charles Parish with 16,620 votes over Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s election in unofficial but complete returns.

Trump led with 63 percent of the vote in the parish and carried Louisiana with 1.1 million votes. Clinton got 8,558 votes in the parish and 779,535 in the state.

“It was another top historic turnout for our parish,” said Brian Champagne,  the parish’s Registrar of Voters.

Champagne said the presidential election drew 73.8 percent or 26,190 of the parish’s voters to the polls. Voters came prepared to vote knowing candidates and six Contitutional amendments on the ballot, Champagne said.

In the parish, Trump’s stronghold areas include Luling with 3,809 votes, Destrehan with 2,593 votes, Norco with 858 votes and Des Allemands with 1,267 votes.

Trump also had strong support in New Sarpy, Paradis and Montz.

Clinton led in the Hahnville area with 611 votes, Killona with 364 and Boutte with 264 cast in the presidential election locally. She also had a strong showing in Boutte and St. Rose areas.

Voting came close for the two in Ama with Trump taking 51 percent of votes over Clinton’s 47 percent.

Early voting results put Trump in the lead with 5,043 votes over Clinton’s 2,493 votes of the total 7,799 votes cast in the parish.

Parish voters supported Republican John Kennedy by 8,566 or 34.4 percent of the vote as their top candidate for the U.S. Senate. Statewide, Kennedy will face Democrat Foster Campbell in a runoff, who got 2,686 or 10.8 percent of parish votes.

In the U.S. Representative 2nd Congressional District race, parish voters supported Democrat Cedric Richmond with 6,539 or 51 percent of the vote, and he won the state vote.

Republican Garret Graves was re-elected as 6th Congressional District representative. He got 3,870 or 45 percent of the parish vote.
