Callers claim to be from American Legion Post
Several residents have been contacted through the phone for donations from people claiming to be from the local American Legion Post, but Sheriff Greg Champagne warns that it is a scam.
Reports of the calls have come from across the parish, and Champagne said the scammers are primarily focusing on senior citizens.
“After pressuring the citizen to donate, the caller insists that he will ‘come over’ to pick up the donation,” Champagne said. “In at least one situation, a man did in fact go to a resident’s home to pick up the donation.
“Fortunately, the citizen called and found out that the local American Legion Posts do not solicit in this manner.”
Champagne said that people should never allow someone to come to their home to pick up a donation and should never give out their address or other information over the telephone. He added that most legitimate organizations solicit by mail.
“If they don’t, I would suggest you decline their request for donations,” he said. “It’s unsafe to allow anyone to come to your home knowing you are there and have money on you.”
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office has also been made aware that an organization calling itself the Louisiana Association of Police Unions has been conducting solicitations over the phone in the parish. Champagne said that while it may be an actual organization, it has no connection to St. Charles Parish and provides no benefit to any local policemen in any way.
Champagne said residents should continue to call the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office if they suspect they are being scammed.
