Sewer project clears way for growth in Killona

It’s taken over a year to put together, but St. Charles Parish Councilman Terrell Wilson has set in motion an estimated $800,000 sewer project that will support growth in the community of Killona.

In a unanimous vote at Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved the cooperative endeavor agreement with the South Central Planning and Development Commission for the Killona Force Main Extension Project.

“It can support future growth, mostly residential growth,” Wilson said.

Wilson said the project will entail realigning how Killona’s sewage enters the Hahnville sewer plant, which will increase sewer capacity for the area and allow for added capacity.

The project was delayed dealing with permit issues with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on wetlands, but they’ve been resolved and were the last hurdle for the project, Wilson said.

Talks also extended over a year dealing with rules of putting pipe under the Union Pacific railroad tracks there.Funding will be shared with a community development block grant of $731,255, and a U.S Environmental Protection Agency grant of $68,748.

Grant Dussom, speaking on behalf of the parish’s grant office, told council members the money was awarded to the parish through the South Central Planning Commission.Milton Allemand of Hahnville questioned the parish using the commission to write grant requests when the parish has a grant writer.

Public Works Director Clayton “Snookie” Faucheux further explained the parish pays an annual membership fee to be a commission member, which entitles the  parish to submit grant requests.

“They look for opportunities for their members,” Faucheux said. “From time to time, they get grants funneled through the state that they are allowed to pass on to their members.”
