Juan Alberto Salinas, who also was arrested in the 2015 major drug bust at a St. Rose man’s home on Super Bowl Sunday, pleaded guilty and was recently sentenced on a charge of possession with intent to distribute Schedule I controlled dangerous substance.
Salinas’ arrest came Feb. 1, 2015, after the DEA tipped deputies that Salinas, who was 20 at the time of his arrest, would be transporting drugs to the St. Rose home of Lance Cowans. Sheriff’s deputies stopped Salinas on Airline Highway for allegedly running a stop sign as he left the residence and found marijuana in his vehicle, according to authorities.
After that arrest, a warrant was issued for Cowans’ residence, where police seized 78 pounds of marijuana, 19 firearms and more than $36,000. Among the weapons found were 17 long rifles and two handguns. Police also found digital scales, small amounts of cocaine and miscellaneous controlled substances.
The marijuana was formed into specially shaped blocks that the Sheriff’s Office said were stored inside of a spare tire that was found cut open in Cowans’ home.
Earlier this year, Cowans, 38, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on two narcotics violations.
Salinas will receive five years active probation and a deferred prison sentence of five years. He was fined $750 and must pay a $60 monthly supervision fee.
