Retrial sought for man found guilty of killing DHS student

Jury found Wells guilty of second-degree murder

The attorney for Javon Wells, the 23-year old New Sarpy man found guilty last month of the 2016 murder of Destrehan High School student Kendall Williams Jr., is seeking a retrial for her client.

According to court documents, attorney Wendy Williams officially filed the motion for a new trial. The motion will be reviewed in court on July 11 at 9 a.m.

July 11 is currently the date Wells is set to be sentenced by Judge Emile R. St. Pierre. Javon faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison, according to St. Charles Parish District Attorney Joel Chaisson II.

Wells was arrested May 4 of last year after Williams’ body was discovered under a gazebo at a park in New Sarpy with a single bullet wound to his head.

A few hours later, Wells was arrested and charged in the murder. Williams was a senior at Destrehan High and less than a week away from his graduation.

Wells was found guilty of second-degree murder at the conclusion of a three day trial.

Two witnesses identified Wells as the shooter, according to police reports.

He was accused of simply walking over to Williams and shooting him point blank.
