Pump it up, get fined

Vehicles with excessive noise to get tickets

The St. Charles Parish council wants to stop drivers from blasting music from their car windows as they ride around the parish.

“They’re blasting the music too loud and the music is filled with vulgar language,” Councilman Paul Hogan said. “If there’s something already in place to put a stop to this, I think we need to be more aggressive in turning people in.”

Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre agrees.

“I live right by Destrehan High School and the noise from kids blasting the music from their car radios literally shakes my windows,” she said. “I’m ready to start video taping these people, getting license plates and turning them in.”

Hogan says people shouldn’t be allowed to place speakers on the outside of the vehicles.

“It’s annoying and it disrupts the peace and quiet in the parish,” he said.

Lt. Fred Oubre, from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said the noise ordinance is already being enforced.

“We issued 96 citations last year for noise and disturbing the peace violations,” he said. “There’s no way to track which ones specifically refer to vehicles passing with loud music.”
