Police warn: Be wary of security company

Went door-to-door without permit, has “F” rating with Better Business Bureau

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for a security system company that has gone door-to-door in the Hahnville area selling security alarms.

The company, Pinnacle Security, LLC., contacted the Sheriff’s Office last week and asked about the door-to-door sales permits that are required by parish ordinance. Sheriff Greg Champagne said that the company was told the requirements and was also told that the Sheriff’s Office would conduct background checks prior to issuing any permits.

“These individuals did not apply and a cursory check with the Better Business Bureau under this company’s name indicated that Pinnacle Security was not highly regarded by the BBB,” Champagne said. “It has come to our attention that salesmen claiming to be with Pinnacle Security have nevertheless gone door-to-door in the Hahnville area selling security systems.”

According to the BBB, Pinnacle Security has an “F” rating and complaints against the company include failing to clearly identify the company’s name, indicating that a replacement or repair is needed when it is not and using untrue statements or deceptive tactics in order to secure the sale of merchandise to customers.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said that several residents in the Hahnville area purchased the security systems that Pinnacle was selling.

“Pinnacle has several complaints against them, in Louisiana and other states, which is always an indication that something is wrong,” he said. “They claimed that their security equipment would work even without a digital box or wireless device.

“If something sounds too good to be true, it is.”

LaGrange said that after the sheriff sent out a warning e-mail to residents in the area asking them to be on the lookout for Pinnacle representatives, three men associated with the company tried to obtain a business license.

“At that point, they had already tried to sell the security systems so all three were issued a misdemeanor summons for door-to-door solicitation without a license,” he said. “We are continuing to monitor the matter and we want anyone who hears from the company to notify us.

“Since they don’t have a business license, if they step foot on private property they can be arrested for criminal trespass.”

LaGrange said that residents should never give money, checks or credit card information to any door-to-door salesman and should always check up on the company. He said that anyone with a permit to perform door-to-door sales will have a license and proper ID.

“No one should purchase anything from Pinnacle Security,” he said.
