A St. Rose man, who police believe was part of a multiple-parish scam operation, used the St. Charles Parish School Board’s name to purchase several laptops that he would pick up at Fed Ex, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Matthew Gill, 51, of 2 Summerton Drive 380, was arrested on July 9 and charged with theft over $1,500, attempted theft and possession of stolen property less than $1,500.
According to authorities, Gill twice used the School Board’s name to purchase several laptops. Using the tracking number, Gill would schedule to pick up the order at Fed Ex before it could be delivered to his home. He reportedly used a fraudulent name, letterhead and purchase orders.
The apparent theft was discovered by the computer company, who notified the School Board of the orders. The School Board called the Sheriff’s Office and detectives working with Fed Ex were able to determine that Gill was the person receiving the stolen items.
During the investigation, detectives say they also learned that Gill used the Bogalusa School Board’s information to purchase laptops. When detectives searched his home, they say they recovered computers related to the Bogalusa theft.
“It is believed that Gill was one of several people operating as part of a scam stretching across multiple jurisdictions within the U.S. and overseas,” Capt. Pat Yoes, Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said.
