Police: 4 injured in hammer, knife attack

A Kenner woman and her mother are accused of using a hammer and knife to attack and injure four St. Rose women inside their home. One of the victims says she was knocked unconscious by the hammer while another was stabbed three times, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The other two women suffered minor injuries.

The incident took place last Sunday when Cariana Hawkins brought her mother, Carla, and sister, Latoya Bullock, to her ex-girlfriend’s home in St. Rose to pick up personal items. Cariana and Carla were escorted by one of the homeowners to a vehicle to pick up the items while Bullock remained inside the home with several other people who lived at the residence, according to Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Witnesses claim that Bullock started a fight inside the home and pulled out a hammer from her pocket. She struck two women with the hammer and knocked out another woman who tried to break up the fight, according to the arrest report. That’s when Cariana and Carla ran back inside the home.

Carla carried a knife and attacked two of the women who had already been hit by a hammer while cutting a third on the arm, the report says.

Carla then fled the scene with her two daughters, LaGrange said.

One of the victims was stabbed three times in her back, while another suffered a cut on her right arm and a third was cut on her index finger, according to the deputy on the scene.

Two of those women who were cut, plus one of their family members, also had blunt force trauma consistent with blows from a hammer, the deputy added.

Cariana Hawkins, 20, Carla Hawkins, 49, and Bullock, 32, all from Kenner, turned themselves in to police later that day. Each denied using any weapons during the fight.

Bullock was charged with aggravated second-degree battery and two counts of aggravated battery. Carla Hawkins was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, while Cariana Hawkins was charged with three counts of simple battery.
