The driver of a St. Charles Parish school bus has been put on administrative leave pending an investigation into a bus accident. The sheriff’s office reports that the driver, who has not been named, parked her bus on the side of the road near U.S. 90 and Des Allemands to quell an argument between two students on board.
She apparently failed to set her parking brake and the bus rolled into a ditch, Sheriff’s Capt. Patrick Yoes said in a report.
There were 30 students on board the bus at the time of the incident. They attend J.B. Martin Middle School.
St. Charles Parish public relations director Rochelle Cancienne told the Herald-Guide that she received no reports about children being injured immediately after the accident, but did hear complaints later on.
“After the accident all the parents were notified,” says Cancienne. “The students were taken to the school cafeteria where they were assessed by the school nurse.”
Cancienne says Erin Raiford, J.B. Martin Middle School principal, went to the scene of the accident to check on the students.
“The children told Erin they were fine and she asked them several times,” Cancienne says.
Cancienne says later on that day “about three” children asked to call their parents.
“Those who wanted to seek medical treatment did so at the discretion of the parents,” Cancienne says.
Yoes confirms that two students were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace.
