Parish auctions off items for extra cash

Forget Office Depot and Office Max.

St. Charles Parish residents will get the chance to purchase office equipment at even lower prices than those two retail chains when the government holds an auction on May 17 at 11 a.m. The parish’s purchasing office is organizing the event, which will feature equipment such as fax machines, desks, chairs, computers, printers, telephones and filing cabinets.

All the items are surplus materials that gradually became unnecessary as individual departments upgraded their equipment. This will be the second auction that the government has held this month. A previous auction on May 3 featured mostly heavy equipment, including surplus vehicles and miscellaneous pumps.

“A little over $160,000 was made, which will go into the parish’s general fund,” Renee Allemand, the parish’s public information officer, said of the May 3 auction.
Allemand said some expenses from running the auction have to come out of that figure, but that holding parish auctions reduces the risks of having surplus equipment unaccounted for or missing.

St. Charles Parish Purchasing Officer Bobby Donaldson said government auctions both reduce the parish’s outside storage costs and gains it some extra money.

Prospective participants are invited to preview auction items up until the time the auction starts. Those buying auction items must present a cashier’s check, bank letter of credit or cash. A professional auctioneer will handle the auction.

The auction will be held at 1313 Paul Maillard Road next to CVS Pharmacy in the old Winn-Dixie Building. State law prohibits parish employees from purchasing items at the auction.
