Ormond Boulevard railroad crossing closes for 3 days

Schools plan to minimize bus delays

The railroad crossing on Ormond Boulevard closest to River Road will be closed for three days for track replacement work.

The closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 and will last until noon on Sunday, Oct. 26. During this time, no vehicles will be allowed to cross the Canadian National railroad tracks. However, Ormond Boulevard will remain open to local traffic on either side of the closure.

While it might cause an inconvenience for many, St. Charles Parish Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre does not expect too many issues to arise during the closure.

“There are signs everywhere warning people about the closing,” she said. “Right now both sides of the railroad are really bad to cross and they are going to level it off and make it smoother.”

While several area residents have expressed concern over how the railroad closure will impact school buses, Pat O’Malley, administrator of ancillary services for St. Charles Parish Public Schools, says the school system is working to minimize the impact.

“As we identify those buses affected, we will work with those buses. We know there will be an impact with late buses for those two days, but we will do everything we can to minimize that,” he said.
