A New Orleans police officer was fired after authorities recently discovered that he wrote a bad check to a St. Rose air conditioning supply company in 2004.
Jeremy Wilcox, a six-year veteran of the NOPD, was pulled over in St. John Parish in July 2012 for driving a truck with no license plate. A deputy ran Wilcox’s driver’s license and discovered that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for issuing a worthless check for $2,505 to a St. Rose company.
Wilcox wrote the check on Sept. 7, 2004 and the company says they sent a letter to him demanding payment after his check was returned. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Jan. 25, 2005 after Wilcox failed to make a payment, according to court documents.
After Wilcox was pulled over in St. John, he returned to St. Charles Parish last year to answer for the check. He paid $2,505 to the company and the charges were dropped by the St. Charles Parish District Attorney’s Office.
However, the NOPD says their investigation showed that Wilcox violated the police department’s policy on moral conduct for writing a check he knew wasn’t good and for removing his truck’s license plate “in hopes that he wouldn’t get stopped.”
The NOPD said in a press release that Wilcox told investigators he learned of the outstanding check in 2011, but didn’t take any steps to make payment or get the issue resolved.
