New Sarpy murder suspect turns himself in

New Sarpy resident Sidney K. Smith, 22, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 28-year old Warren Sanders last Saturday night.

According to witnesses, Smith got into an argument with Sanders around 9 p.m. in the 800 block of East Terrance Street in New Sarpy. The argument was reportedly over Sanders’ intentions towards Smith’s girlfriend.

The confrontation resulted in Smith firing a small caliber weapon hitting Sanders in the abdomen and head, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.  Detectives arrived on the scene to find Sanders lying unresponsive in a ditch. He was pronounced dead.

Smith fled the scene and the Sheriff’s Office released a report to the media identifying Smith as a murder suspect who was presumed armed and dangerous. Smith turned himself in 24 hours later.

Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said Smith has one prior conviction for disturbing the peace in July of 2011.

Smith’s arraignment hearing has been set for May 19 he remains held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center under $500,000 bond.
