New Orleans man found guilty of Hahnville murder

A New Orleans man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of a Hahnville man at Raintree Court Apartments in December of 2008.

Hahnville resident Ed Raymond, 26, was found on the floor of an apartment at Raintree Court with a gunshot wound to his head. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said that Raymond helped steal marijuana from a drug dealer who lives in New Orleans, but had traveled to Hahnville to make the sale.

According to authorities, that drug dealer was Harry Carraby, who was found guilty of Raymond’s murder. Carraby allegedly broke into the apartment and shot Raymond after he and two other men had stolen drugs. Carraby was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene, and one of the men who police think helped steal the drugs, 19-year-old Dejae L. Smith, turned himself in three days after the crime took place. Smith supposedly fired shots at Carraby as he fled.
Smith was charged with attempted second-degree murder and simple robbery. His case is still pending.

Jy’Vohn Harris, who authorities say also participated in the robbery with Smith, pled guilty last year to simple robbery and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
