New museum shines on rich, local history

Generations of parish residents will get the chance to view the area’s unique history with the opening of a new museum next month at the Destrehan Plantation.

A museum was opened in the parish in 1998, but after the River Road Museum and the St. Charles Historical Foundation merged in 2007, the two societies decided to open an expanded museum in the Caire House behind the Destrehan Plantation.

The building, which dates back to the 1820s, was once the cypress cottage of a sugar cane plantation overseer. The house was donated to Destrehan Plantation by the Caire family in 2003 and has undergone renovations to become a museum.

“The organization has been collecting artifacts/history for a number of years,” Lily Galland, the president of the St. Charles Museum and Historical Association, said. “St. Charles Parish has a rich, diverse culture. The museum, just as Destrehan Plantation, is very important to the region.

“It’s all about preserving and advancing the history, traditions and culture of the parish.”

The museum will open to the public on Oct. 27, which is Heritage Day at Destrehan Plantation.
