St. Charles Parish Animal Control workers will soon say goodbye to the building that has housed stray cats and dogs in the parish for nearly 30 years.
The St. Charles Parish Council awarded a $1.58 million contract to build a new animal shelter in the Esperanza Business Park in Luling. The new building will nearly double the capacity of the current shelter and will stand at 8,829 square feet.
The new shelter, which will be located behind the St. Charles Parish School Board’s maintenance building at 931 Rue La Cannes, will have 45 dog runs and 60 cat cages. The current shelter has 22 dog runs and 36 cat cages, according to parish spokeswoman Renee Allemand Simpson.
Land for the shelter was donated to St. Charles Parish by the St. Charles Parish Humane Society. Esperanza Land LLC had previously donated the land to the Humane Society in 2007, according to Tim Vial, chief administrative officer of St. Charles Parish.
The parish also received a $300,000 grant for the project.
Animal Control Director Angie Robert said the number of animals housed at the shelter increases by around 20 percent each year and that the current shelter is “busting at the seams.”
Robert said the new facility would allow for the animals to be more segregated, thus preventing the transfer of diseases.
“We do a really good job of that now with what we have, but this will be a better, more state-of-the-art facility,” she said.
Councilman Dennis Nuss agrees, calling the project a no-brainer.
“This is the right spot and the right fit,” he said.
The contract was awarded to Gee Cee Company of Louisiana.
