Bobcat killed in collision with man’s riding lawnmower
St. Charles Parish resident, Henry Bergeron, was cutting grass in a field across the street from his house on the morning of Saturday, June 9, when a bobcat plowed into his riding lawnmower. Kenny Schmill, the alligator nuisance control officer for St. Charles Parish has had an encounter with bobcats too and said they are common in this area because of all of the woods and swamps.
“From the Bayou Gauche Road to Mimosa Park in the wooded and swamp areas is where the bobcats live,” Schmill told the Herald-Guide.
“When I was 15 years old, my neighbor killed two bobcats in Boutte,” he continued.
“Just recently in the last couple of years people have been seeing them in the marsh areas in the parish.”
Schmill said bobcats generally won’t attack anybody, but they eat a lot of rabbits and small rodents like mice. “It’s very rare to see the bobcats roaming around in people’s yards,” he said.
“The animals won’t attack unless you corner them and its only a defense mechanism.”
Schmill said bobcats aren’t the only wild animals roaming around.
“Coyotes are also part of this parish,” he said.
“They howl between dusk and dawn and when I’m at my camp in Mimosa in the George Cousin Canal I can hear the coyotes howling in the evening, starting about dusk.”
