Man booked 4 years after spillway shooting

Suspect charged with shooting Des Allemands girlfriend 5 times

A LaPlace man who authorities believe shot his Des Allemands girlfriend five times at the Bonnet Carre Spillway in 2007 was arrested and booked with attempted first degree murder.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Roy McDaniel, of 1061 Whitlow Court, was driving back from Mississippi on April 23, 2007 with his girlfriend when the two began arguing with one another.

“The argument went on for some time and McDaniel eventually pulled over the car at the spillway and his girlfriend got out,” Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said. “At this point McDaniel allegedly pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times.”

Police say that five bullets entered the victim’s body, with three hitting her in the left arm and one hitting her in the chest right above the heart. She was also struck in the stomach.

“After the shooting, McDaniel put her in the car and drove her to the River Parishes Hospital. She was then transported to University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery,” LaGrange said.

He added that the victim likely survived the shooting because McDaniel rushed her to the nearest hospital.

“After dropping her off at the hospital, McDaniel fled the scene,” LaGrange said.

While McDaniel was on the run, he was arrested in Mississippi for a separate crime, LaGrange said.

“He has been in a Mississippi jail since the shooting, and after he completed his sentence there for an unrelated crime he was extradited here to face his attempted murder charge,” he said.

McDaniel was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on April 12.
