LaPlace man killed on Hwy 61 after leaving Spillway Bar

A pedestrian leaving the Spillway Bar in Norco at 5 a.m. the morning of July 15 walked into traffic on Airline Hwy and was struck and killed. Wayne A. Swanson, 25, of Laplace, exited the Spillway Bar on Airline Highway and walked directly into the southbound lanes of travel, into the path of a Mitsubishi, according to Louisiana State Police, Troop B, who was called to the scene.

The crash involved a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Paula Barnes, 41, of Laplace.

The Mitsubishi was traveling southbound in the right lane of U.S. 61 when Swanson walked onto the Hwy.

According to the report, the driver of the Mitsubishi attempted to avoid impact by braking and swerving into the left lane, but was unable to do so.

Swanson suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to witnesses in the bar, Swanson was impaired and arguing with his girlfriend and distraught when he left the bar.

Impairment on part of the pedestrian as well as his state of mind at the time are factors in this crash.

It was raining and the roadway was wet at the time of the crash.

The factors in this crash are still under investigation. Trooper T. Calagna is continuing his investigation
