Lack of produce forces West Bank market to close temporarily

Organizers of the German Coast Farmer’s Market have been forced to temporarily close shop at their West Bank market due to inclement weather conditions and lack of fall produce.

But market spokesperson Ann Montgomery wants patrons not to worry. She says that the market should be up and running again within a month.

“We want to stress to our customers that this closing is temporary,” she said. “We are not giving up on the West Bank market and will use this time to recruit new vendors and promote the market.”

The market, which celebrated its two-year anniversary in July, has struggled to  maintain vendors who can supply seasonal fall produce like broccoli and cauliflower.

“Many of our fruit and vegetable farmers are frustrated,” Montgomery said. “With all this rain and hot temperatures, it’s hard to grow fall produce.”

While the West Bank market officially closed on Aug. 27, Montgomery points out that the East Bank market will still be in operation each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.

“I recommend  that all of our West Bank patrons stop by the East Bank market to see we have to offer,” she said. “We do have some produce available at that market, along with many other homemade items.”
