Grandma pleads guilty to negligent injuring

Failed to seek treatment for handicapped granddaughter after dog attack

A grandmother pleaded guilty to negligent injuring after failing to seek treatment for her handicapped granddaughter, who had been attacked by a dog.

Lynda Bowman, 68, was sentenced to 30 days in parish prison, but the sentence was suspended. She was also placed on six months of inactive probation, which means she does not have to report to a probation officer. Bowman was originally charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, but the charge was amended to negligent injuring with the support of the victim’s mother, according to court documents.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted by River Parishes Hospital last May regarding a 6-year-old handicapped child who was in the emergency room with severe lacerations to her face. Doctors told authorities that the injury was consistent with a dog attack.

During the investigation police learned that the child was in the custody of Bowman, her grandmother who lives in LaPlace. Bowman was house/dog sitting for her son in the Hahnville area at the time.

The injured girl’s mother told police that Bowman dropped the child off to her with a large bandage covering the child’s face.

According to authorities, she told the mother that the child had climbed on an outdoor furniture chair and had fallen off, which caused the injuries.

Bowman did not tell the mother that the child was bitten by a dog and did not seek medical attention for the severe injury, which showed signs of infection, authorities say.
