Former DHS teacher pleads guilty to sex with student in St. Charles Parish

Naquin gets suspended jail sentence, probation and must register as offender

Former Destrehan High School teacher Kimberly Naquin has pleaded guilty to one count of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and her then 16-year-old student in St. Charles Parish.

Naquin made the plea today (April 11) in the 29th Judicial District Court in return for a six-month sentence in parish jail that was suspended. She was placed on two-year inactive probation pending compliance with all conditions of her felony probation in Jefferson Parish and must pay a $500 fine plus court costs.

Naquin also must register as a sex offender for 15 years.

Last month, she also pleaded guilty to two counts related to her relationship with the same student in Jefferson Parish.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s investigation, the student told authorities the inappropriate contact occurred at Naquin’s prior residence in Kenner and in the DHS classroom and a Destrehan residence. The relationship began in September 2014 and lasted until August 2015, according to the student.

Naquin was sentenced to five years in prison for one count of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student, and six months in prison on one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Both jail sentences also were dropped by 24th Judicial District Court Judge June Berry Darensburg in Jefferson Parish. Darensburg placed Naquin on five years of active probation. She was charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile charge and a misdemeanor charge of prohibited sexual contact between a teacher and student.

Darensburg told Naquin if she violates any conditions of her probation she is going to jail for five years.

Naquin’s plea brings to a close the case that began after the 27-year-old’s arrest on Jan. 14, 2016.

In St. Charles Parish, the terms of Naquin’s probation are the maximum allowed by law for the offense, according to the District Attorney’s office.

“I have reviewed all of the evidence in this case and have discussed the resolution of this matter with the family of the victim,” said St. Charles Parish District Attorney Joel Chaisson II. “As a result of my review and those conversations, I have made the determination that the plea agreement reached today serves the interests of justice by bringing this matter to a conclusion after a long and difficult time for the victim, her family and our community.”

In Darensburg’s court, Naquin apologized to the victim and her parents, saying, “I betrayed your trust.”

The victim’s father testified that his daughter’s psychological distress was “the result of the selfish predatory actions of the teacher. School is supposed to be a safe place for children to mature and to learn, and this teacher has ruined that.”

Naquin was the student’s world history teacher and sought a relationship with the minor student one week after her 16th birthday, keeping her at school after class hours, the victim told the judge in impact testimony.
