A second East Bank resident has joined the race for the soon-to-be-vacant District 56 seat in the Louisiana State House of Representatives.
Destrehan’s Ram Ramachandran recently announced his candidacy for the House seat. Norco native Greg Miller had previously announced his candidacy for the position.
Ramachandran is a former District 3 councilman who served two terms as Councilman at Large in St Charles Parish. He is a consulting engineer and has been a resident of Destrehan for the past 29 years.
During his time on the Parish Council, he said he strived for transparency in government at all levels and emphasized web based publication of all budget items and expenses. He also said he focused on future generations by improving technical education and vocational technical training to meet industry needs.
Ramachandran aims to make the state attractive for new investments and existing petrochemical plant expansions by reducing rail shipment costs. He also thinks there is a need to reduce the size of government at the state level by eliminating all un-funded mandates and shifting governance to the local level.
He will promote new enterprises, such as bio remediation technology, and promote Louisiana’s seafood and agriculture. If elected, he will support funding for public safety, community protections and wetland preservation.
He said that levee protection needs to be expanded westward to protect Montz and LaPlace where residents and major companies on the East Bank are exposed to hurricanes and flooding.
Ramachandran and his wife of 37 years, Sue, live in Destrehan with their 20-year-old daughter, Ajantha, who is in the Master’s program at Louisiana Technical University.
