Early voting begins Saturday

Early voting begins on Feb. 23 for the 1st Congressional Party Primary and will be the first chance voters get to fill Gov. Bobby Jindal’s vacated seat.

M. V. “Vinny” Mendoza and Gilda Reed are battling it out for the Democratic nomination, while Tim Burns, Ben Morris, Steve Scalise and David Simpson are fighting for the Republican nomination.

Unlike the voting for the recent Presidential Preference Primary, you may vote in the Democratic Party Primary if you are a registered Democrat or an unaffiliated voter. That means you cannot be a member of the Green, Libertarian, Republican or Reform parties.

For the Republicans, you must be a registered Republican to vote in the primary.

Early voting will open on Feb. 23, then resume on Feb. 25 until March 1. March 8 is election day.

Early voters on the west bank can vote at the Hahnville Courthouse, while those on the east bank can vote at the Artebury Building.
