Drinkers get free ride during holidays

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office and Jake’s Towing are making sure residents have no excuse to drink and drive this holiday season.

As they have done in years past, the Sheriff’s Office is offering local residents a free ride home if they consume alcohol this holiday season. All a resident has to do is give the Sheriff’s Office a call at 985-783-6807 and a deputy will pick them up and take them home.

“Because of this service, there is no excuse to drink and drive and shame on those that don’t take advantage of it,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said. “This is one less reason a person has to get behind the wheel after they’ve been drinking.”

While the Sheriff’s Office will give a free ride to those that consume alcohol, Jake’s Towing is offering to tow their vehicles home for them.

“I’ve seen so many accidents and a lot of them are caused by alcohol,” Clint Jacob, of Jake’s Towing, said. “The Sheriff’s Office is offering rides to people, but some people may not call because they are worried about their cars. We will take care of their cars for them and bring the vehicles to their home, as long as they are operable and the person lives in the parish.

“This is chance to give back to the community and there is no excuse for anyone to drink and drive.”

Local residents that want their cars towed home during the holiday season can call 985-785-4444.

Both of these offers are good for local residents only, and the vehicle has to be operational. The Sheriff’s Office and Jake’s Towing will only pick up people and tow the vehicles of those who realize ahead of time that they have had too much to drink before they get behind the wheel.

“If someone is stopped by the police or involved in an accident, the offer is no longer valid,” Yoes said. “If that’s the case, their ride will be to jail and their vehicle will be impounded.”

The offers are good until New Year’s Day.
