The Destrehan senior class is mourning the death of a classmate who was gunned down just days before graduation.
At 8:30 p.m. the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was called to a shooting at East Harding and 8th Street in New Sarpy. When officers arrived, they discovered the body of Destrehan High School senior Kendall Williams Jr., who had been shot in the head.
Hours later, deputies arrested Javon D. Wells, 22, of 740 East Hoover St. in New Sarpy, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Wells was being held on $1 million bond at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center as of Thursday.
St. Charles Parish School System spokeswoman Stevie Crovetto said support is being provided to students and staff in accordance with the district’s crisis management and emergency response plan.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of a Destrehan High School senior who was shot and killed last night,” Crovetto said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the students and staff at Destrehan High School and our community.
She said, in addition to school counselors who are on site daily, additional support staff members are at the high school to assist students and staff.
