Destrehan named Louisiana’s richest town

Destrehan was named Louisiana’s richest town by a 24/7 Wall St. analysis that examined small communities where a majority of households exceed national median income.

The town, with a population of 10,906, also ranks among the nation’s richest towns according to the analysis.

Destrehan was reported with an $88,783 median household income compared to a $46,710 state average. Median household value was reported at $226,600 compared to the state average of $152,900

Destrehan’s poverty rate was listed as 6.7 percent compared to the state average of 19.6 percent.

St. Charles Parish Councilman Dick Gibbs, who represents District 3, said  average household income is an estimated $13,000 higher than the national average.

Also, Destrehan is diverse, safe and 20 minutes from restaurants and malls, and ranked as one of the top 15 places to live in Louisiana, Gibbs said.

It also has “a great golf community that attracts business leaders with families due to the public school system,” Gibbs said. “Of all the cities and towns in Louisiana, Destrehan spends the most, per student, on learning and development.”

The councilman added, “Destrehan continues to be one of the safest places to live in Louisiana with one of the lowest crime rates.”

New York-based 24/7 Wall St.’s analysis on the richest town in every state was aimed at demonstrating wealth tends to cluster in certain affluent areas of the country.
