Corp. Burt Hazeltine identified as Thursday’s shooting victim in Paradis

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified Corp. Burt Hazeltine as the shooting victim in an “apparent ambush” in Paradis.

Hazeltine, 36, has a wife and four children. He has been with the sheriff’s department for about 15 years, where he serves in the traffic division.

Hazeltine, who was shot multiple times, was reported in stable, but guarded condition as of noon today at University Hospital in New Orleans.

He was shot three times and suffered wounds to his face, arm and chest. Investigators say his vest may have saved his life. However, doctors say Hazeltine might lose his eyesight and the bullet penetrated his lung. He was taken into surgery for bleeding in the chest.

The alleged shooter, not yet identified but in custody, apparently shot Hazeltine multiple times near the intersection of Louisiana Street and Highway 90 in Paradis. The deputy was directing school traffic around 9 a.m. when a man in a silver truck apparently fired on him.

Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said the shooting appeared unprovoked and a motive was not immediately known.

Witnesses say they heard two round of shots (four to five shots each round) and then saw deputies apprehend the man in the silver truck.

Yoes said the suspect fired on Hazeltine and he returned fire.
